Self Help

Eventually we all seem to let life get in the way. We can all use some help, whether help at work or help losing weight or just gaining motivation or self confidence.

The problem is that no matter how many diet or self help books people read things never seem to change for the long term.

I believe that, while books are a great way to gain valuable knowledge on a subject, they have one flaw for creating lasting change.

They deal almost exclusively in the conscious mind.

You actively read books so very little of this actively read material soaks into the subconscious. Most people don't realize the absolute power of the subconscious mind to create changes that last a lifetime. You can have a great idea and be completely motivated to move forward and start that idea, but if this idea isn't 100% ingrained into your subconscious then eventually whatever is ingrained in the subconscious will take over.

For example, as part of your New Year's resolution you decide to lose weight, you get 100% motivated the first week of January, you read a diet book, you buy exercise clothes and equipment, you might even join a gym. Remember you're 100% motivated.

For a few weeks things seem to be going great you are eating healthier, using some techniques from the diet book, you go to the gym a few times a week, you actually start to lose some weight.

But then did you ever notice that things start to change by mid-February?

Why do the majority of people break their New Year's resolution by February?

Why? Because the subconsious mind had a different idea than your weight lose idea.

If your conscious mind is thinking about going to the gym and eating a salad for dinner but your subconscious want's to sit on the couch, play xbox and eat hamburgers, then guess which side will win, eventually?

Correct, the subconscious will definitely win out eventually.

The first month, after reading the books, investing in a gym membership and new sneakers you are completely Gung-Ho. While you are consciously Gung-Ho you're subconscious will go along for the ride (actually, it's more like it's being swept up in all the excitement) but like everything this excitement will wear off after a little while. Then the subconscious mind starts to tempt you with what it really wants to do (what it's programmed to do.)

Wait! Are you trying to program my mind? Brainwash me?

I'm not trying to say that we can just re-program your mind to do something it really doesn't want to do, absolutely not!

Then how exactly does subliminal suggestions differ from brain programing?

The exact way subliminal suggestions work is by flooding the subconscious mind with thousands of positive suggestions to achieve an goal or outcome. So if you took the month of January and while going to the gym all Gung-Ho you also listened to an mp3 program containing thousands of subliminal suggestions about losing weight or exercising or eating healthier everyday then without even realizing it, your subconscious mind would reinforce the whole idea of weight loss.

Assuming that weight loss is an actual goal that didn't go against your core beliefs and values, your subconcious mind would be open to the new idea because it respresents a positive change overall.

That is how you create lasting change.

Aligning your subconscious mind with your conscious goals and ideas.
